While clouds can be seen in our webcam, the height is often hard to estimate. Since November 2019 a ceilometer (CS135 from Campbell Scientific Ltd.) is installed on our roof at the Klingelbergstrasse 27 in Basel.
The ceilometer uses the backscatter of a laster to estimate cloud height and the mixing layer height, a height until which the surface influences the atmosphere and not quite the same as the boundary layer. Both are shown here to demonstrate the different heights of clouds and - perhaps more interestingly - to illustrate the evolution of the mixing layer over the course of the day in an urban environment.
