rural
reference sites
There are a total
of four rural reference sites operated by the Institute of Meteorology of the
University of Basel.
The station "Grenzach"
(GRNZ) is located East of Basel inside the valley of the Rhine-River. The
turbulence instruments are operated at a 110m TV / Radio Tower in 28m
height. Radiation and soil measurements are carried out at tower base.
Additionally a SODAR is operated.
The station "Village
Neuf" (VLNF) is located North of the City inside the Upper Rhine-River
Plain. The turbulence instruments are operated at a small 5m tower.
Standard meteo, radiation and soil measurements are carried out at same
site.
The station "Basel - Lange
Erlen" (BLER) is located in the valley of the Wiese-River in the
Northeast of the city of Basel. The station is influeced by a valley wind system. The
station consists of a micrometeorological profile tower with 4 levels, radiation
measurements, soil measurements and standard meteorological
instrumentation.
The rural station
"Gempen" (GEMP) is 450m higher than the city of Basel (710m a.s.l.), located around
15km SSE of the city in the Jura-mountains. In wintertime the station can be often on top
of the inversion, which covers the Rhine-plane. The station is the same type as
"Basel-Lange Erlen" with a micrometeorological profile, radiation measurements,
soil measurements and standard meteorological instrumentation.
